Balancing Your Life As a Graduate Student

As we begin a new year, it always seems that "getting a grip" on our lives is a resolution. At least at some level.
Whether we want to be more organized, start a business, work out more, or even eat better food. Getting back in balance is always a priority, but how do we actually accomplish this while we are so busy with our studies?
From my experience, scheduling and planning only takes us so far - and even then it seems like a drag to have to keep updating a pesky planner each week. I have often wondered why I even write these goals down if a paper or presentation is just going to overrun them... However, this past Fall I feel like I finally was somewhat on top of my goals.
This Fall I took time to acknowledge that it's ALL important. Everything in my life is important and should be treated as a priority. Revolutionary, I know - not!
However acknowledging this freed me from the guilt that often came from picking and choosing priorities. After all, my work is critically important to me but so are my friendships and family.
Now, as I schedule time for work and classes, I also schedule time for family and friends - treating these blocks as meetings and due dates for me to be fully present at. This seemingly small change has improved my focus, productivity, and relationships significantly. When I am at work, I fully "lock in" on the work I am passionate about. When I am with family and friends, I fully "lock in" on building and deepening the relationships I am blessed enough to have. Again, this mindset shift has been critical for improving relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.
How are you working to establish balance in the new year and semester?
Keep growing!
